For this month’s article we stop at the Flint area’s Redwood Lodge. Located at the convergence of I-75 and US 23, this Mundy Township business has been brewing beer on site since 1997.
The Redwood Lodge is a collection of many businesses. The Redwood Brewing Company, the Redwood Steak House, The Sequoia Lounge, and Redwood Catering all reside under this large roof at 5304 Gateway Centre Drive just south of Flint.
The Redwood Brewing Company is licensed as a Michigan Brewpub, which means it is only allowed to serve its craft beer in-house. Even without wide distribution, it is very well respected and recognized in the Michigan brewing industry, and won the Small Brewpub of the Year award at the Great American Beer Festival in 2008. This award recognizes excellence in brewing for on-premises breweries producing less than 1,500 barrels a year.
On a typical day you will find ten to twelve draft selections and up to two cask ale selections. During my last visit the styles ran from Redwood Light and Kolsch for the lighter offerings, and the IPA and the 11.5 percent alcohol Anniversary Ale at the heavier end of the spectrum. Just released was Dust My Brown, a beautiful roasty brown ale, and Ziggy’s Bock a nice malty sweet spring time offering. Along with the Small Brewpub of the Year award, many of the beer selections have also won awards at National and Local competitions. Of note, the Redwood Cream Stout, is probably the most awarded beer in the State of Michigan. More information on Redwood Brewing can be obtained by calling 810-233-8000 or at www.redwoodbrewingco.com.
To go with the beer, the Redwood Steak House features Mesquite Grilled steaks and much more from Chef Luis Fernandes’ kitchen. A wide variety of hot and cold appetizers introduce you to the rest of the menu which features soups and salads, burgers and sandwiches, pizza and pasta, and the star of the show, the grilled steaks, chicken, and seafood. There is truly something for everyone at the Redwood Steak House. The “Signature” menu is available after 4 PM daily and a smaller “Pub” menu is always available. More information on the restaurant is available at 810-233-8000 or at www.theredwoodlodge.com . Taking things a step further, Redwood Catering operates out of the same facility and offers a full range of catering services, including many of your Redwood Steak House favorites. Some notable catering clients include the Flint Institue for the Arts and the Flint Cultural Center. For catering information Joan Ruhl can be contacted at 810-233-8000 or www.redwoodcatering.com.. The fourth portion of the Redwood is the Sequoia Lounge. The Sequoia is a martini and cigar lounge which features fine wines, premium liquors, handmade cigars, and Redwood beer.
As with any establishment, the Redwood uses events and specials to generate business. Food pairings are in the spotlight with the wine tastings on the 4th Monday of each month, and martini mixers on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Not to take a back seat, the Redwood Beer Appreciation Society holds tastings on the 2nd Monday of the month. Other events include a happy hour from 3-7 p.m. on weekdays and live entertainment in the Sequoia Lounge from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Stop in at the Redwood Lodge for award winning beers, mesquite grilled food, or one of their many events.
