It has been brought to the attention of the MLBA that some Health Departments in Michigan may be using vague language in a state law to charge excessive and inconsistent "re-inspection" fees for establishments in their jurisdictions. Obviously, this practice is unfair and must be dealt with.
We need your help to identify where these fees are being collected, and how much the offending Health Departments are charging businesses. Please take a few moments to reply to the brief survey below. We ask for your establishment and your name ONLY so that the MLBA may contact you if needed, and your personal information will NOT be shared with anyone outside our offices.

LANSING, January 3, 2012 – Studies released in December show encouraging statistics in the areas of both drunken driving and teenage alcohol use, with alcohol-related traffic fatalities at a 10-year low in Michigan, and underage drinking hitting record national lows in the past year.
According to reports, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) recorded just over 4,000 alcohol-related traffic crashes resulting in 264 fatalities in 2010 – both numbers down nearly 40 percent from ten years before. Meanwhile, Monitoring the Future, the University of Michigan’s ongoing study on trends among the nation’s young people, announced a continuing decline in teen alcohol use across the country resulting in “historical low” levels of underage drinking.

I hope everybody had a wonderful and safe holiday season. As we move into a new year I look forward to 2012 and what it has to offer, as we anticipate a lot of changes pending for our membership and our industry in Michigan.
I would like to start off with a “Thank You” to the MLBA Officers, for having faith in me and choosing me for the job of Executive Director. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead of us. With my background in Law Enforcement, I have worked with licensed establishments for many years. I always took pride in the fact that I realized that licensed establishments are crucial to a communities’ economic survival. With my new role I will able to work with you and represent all licensees around the state.

LANSING, November 30, 2011 – After a two-month search, evaluation and hiring process, the members and Executive Board of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association announced today the appointment of Scott T. Ellis as the association’s new Executive Director.
Ellis, of Mason, Mich., is retiring from his long-time position with the Lansing Police Department to lead the MLBA’s staff. While working his way up to his current position of Detective at the LPD, Ellis has served alongside MLBA members and staff in various capacities for more than a decade. “We are very fortunate to have known Scott in a professional capacity for a long time,” said MLBA President Rick Roberson, owner of Angelo’s & Riccardo’s in Hesperia, Mich. “His great work with our Association over the years makes him a natural fit for the Executive Director position.”

Happy new year to all, and I hope everyone had a great holiday season both at home and in their businesses.
We begin the new year anticipating a lot of change in our industry, as the final report of the Liquor Advisory Rules Committee was presented to the Governor just before the holidays. As I’m writing this, we’re not sure what the committee came up with, but we know they were tasked with revamping the regulation of our industry from the top to the bottom — everything, the Governor’s office said, is on the table.

SOUTHFIELD (June 22, 2011) -- At its semi-annual public hearing held today, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission heard an alarming financial report: On-premises sales of distilled spirits are now down more than 20%.
The figures compared sales to on-premises establishments in April 2011, to figures from the same month last year -- which just happened to be the final month before Michigan's smoking ban went into effect on May 1, 2010. April's alarming comparative drop follows a long line of similar news, and was reported along with a Fiscal Year To Date drop of nearly 5%.
