Michigan Employee Assistance Grant Application Guidelines

Since the initial shutdown, we have received an abundance of calls from bar and restaurant owners who were not only worried about their businesses, but also the livelihood of their employees.
When meeting with the legislature and the governor’s office, we emphasized the need for direct payments to bar and restaurant workers who had been burdened financially by the pandemic.
We are grateful that our efforts have paid off. Below is a general overview of the grant program. Please share this information with your employees.

Michigan Employee Assistance Grants overview

Employees impacted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Gathering and Face Mask Order that took effect on November 18, 2020 are eligible to apply for an Employee Assistance Grant of up to $1,650 during the application period of Jan. 15 through 25. The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation is administering the application process for the Employee Assistance Grants under Senate Bill 748 (SB 748). All Employee Assistance Grant applicants will receive an email no later than Feb. 26, 2021 confirming whether the grant was approved or denied. The State of Michigan Department of Treasury will issue the grant payments to approved grant recipients. Grant awards are taxable, but will not count against unemployment as income.

Who is Eligible?
Michigan employees impacted by the MDHHS Order of November 2020 must have been working in one of the following industries to qualify for an Employee Assistance Grant:
• Bars
• Banquet Halls
• Bowling Allies
• Cafeterias
• Casinos
• Caterers
• Food Trucks
• Golf Courses
• Hotels, Motels, Bed & Breakfast, Resorts
• Nightclubs
• Restaurants
• Theaters

Application Details
• Online applications are available at mrlaef.org/money.
• Application period is open from 9 a.m. on Jan. 15 until 5 p.m. on Jan. 25.
• All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Jan. 25.
• Employees will need to provide:
o Proof of employment in November 2020
o Proof of impact by the MDHHS Gathering and Face Mask Order that took effect on Nov. 18
o Additional information and required document details online at mrlaef.org/money.
